1. How did Paint Away Days start?

It was started by Sarah Ingle. She says " I wanted to go painting outside but I was not comfortable with going and painting by myself, especially in some of the more remote places. As I couldn't find a group of like-minded people, a friend suggested that I invite other artists to come and paint in our garden. But as Cornwall is full of wonderful places to go and paint, this led to the idea of arranging painting days for people at different locations. From this Paint Away Days began." (back)

2. Who organises the Paint Away Days?

The organisation and administration is undertaken by Bob Ingle, though Sarah will be present at each Paint Away Day. (back)

  3. Are either of you professional artists?

Sarah Ingle is a leisure artist, who started painting again 13 years ago, at Adult Education Classes in Cornwall, having not painted since leaving school. She has held exhibitions and sold paintings, some of which have gone abroad. Bob Ingle has dabblesdwith painting, but his expertise is in the organisation. (back)

Sarah says "My first experience of painting outdoors was in connection with adult education classes, going out together on a summers evening for a couple of hours painting.

"For the last three years I have helped a friend with painting holidays where we have gone out to paint at different locations. My responsibility was specifically for beginners.

"Also I took part in the BBC's 'Rolf on Art' programme painting with Rolf Harris at the Eden Project in 2001, and also in Trafalgar Square painting a section of the "People's Haywain" in 2004."

5. What are the advatages of joining a Paint Away Day?

It is a chance to join with like minded people to go and paint in interesting and sometimes unusual locations. Paint Away Days has been invited to some of the locations and these would not be available to an individual.

Painting days will be arranged throughout the twelve months of the year. The winter venues will hopefully have a view so that we can still paint what we see, but from the comfort of indoors. I hope to have a laptop and printer available so that anyone with a digital camera may go and take a picture of the scene they wish to paint, and I will be able to print it out for them.

Even during the rest of the year a hall or room will be available at each location as the British weather is unpredictable. The room will also be a place to meet together for tea/coffee and lunch. (back)

6. Where do Paint Away Days go?

Cornwall is full of beautiful scenery, but it also has it's wilderness areas and an industrial history. So I try to organise a variety of locations, each with a choice of subjects. Some of the places we have been to are -

Trebah Gardens
Geevor Tin Mine
Farm near Truro
Portreath using the Surf Life Saving Club
St Mawgan and the Japanese Garden
Lerryn
Rough Tor on Bodmin Moor
The Eden Project, St Austell
National Maritime Museum, Falmouth

7. How do you choose the locations?

To start with it was places that we knew, but it is impossible for any one person to know all the good places to visit. So locations have been added -

1. By using the internet to find information on suitable places eg Lerryn Memorial Hall.

2. Travelling around Cornwall collecting phone numbers for Village Halls in suitable places eg Crantock.

3. Other people have told of places they know, eg Portreath Surf Life Saving Club.

4. People have made contact and suggested their location as suitable eg Higher Trevaster Farm. (back)

8. Is Paint Away Days for fine days only?

No, this is all the year round. As the British weather is unpredictable, even in the summer, a room or hall is hired at each location for us to use if the weather is bad. Photographs are available for you to use if you wish. In the winter locations will be found where we can stay indoors and paint the view through a window. Also a laptop and printer will be available at the winter venues, so that if you have a digital camera you can take a photograph of the scene you wish to paint, and it can be printed for you.

  9. Will the day be cancelled for bad weather?

No. There is no need to cancel a Paint Away Day as each location will have a room or hall available that we can paint in regardless of the weather. Photographs will be available. (back)

10. What happens during the winter months?

Paint Away Days will continue during the winter. Llocations will be found where it will be possible to paint a view through a window, so we are able to stay indoors. Also I will bring a laptop and printer so that anyone with a digital camera may go out and take a photograph of the view they would like to paint. Photographs will also be available. (back)

11. How much will it cost to go on a Paint Away Day?

Usually the cost will be £13, variations to this will be shown with the location details. This covers the organisation of the day and location, hire of a room or hall to meet in. It may also cover the entry fee to a location. (back)

12. I could go with my friends, so why should I pay?

There is no reason why you should not go painting with your friends for the day. The advantage of joining Paint Away Days is that I will arrange a venue to meet and use if the weather is bad, tea/coffee are provided, and you will meet other artists with the opportunity to learn from each other.

Also I am able to arrange painting days at locations which would not normally be accessible. (back)

13. Can I bring children?

Children aged10 years and over are always welcome, as long as they come with a responsible adult (see Terms and Conditions). (back)

14. Will you give a demonstration?

Sarah will help those who have not painted outside before, or who are beginners wanting help on how to get started. This will be available for anybody who would like to join in, but it will not be a formal demonstration. She will be guided by the help that is required and the subjects to be painted.

Otherwise you will be able to paint or draw the whole of the time. If you have a problem with your picture other participants, or Sarah will be happy to make suggestions. There is no right or wrong way to paint, and by being together as a group we will be able to learn from each other.(back)

15. I have not painted since I left school?

Sarah is happy to give guidance to anybody who is just starting to paint. You may use any medium you like as she will look at the subjects at the location and suggest ways of tackling them to create a picture. It is possible to hire watercolour paints and all you need for the day for an extra fee of £2, but they must be booked when sending your deposit.

If you find you have a problem then Sarah will help where she can, but you will find that the other participants will be able to help as well. (back)

16. Do I have to paint in watercolour?

No. The medium you use is your choice. At the simplest it could be a pencil drawing, or you may decide to paint in oils. It is best to use whatever you feel more comfortable with, or even experiment to find out what you prefer. (back)
