After some wet weather we had a sunny warm day for our visit to Charlestown. In the evening one of the square rigged ships was due to arrive, so our day went from 2.30pm to 8pm. We were based in Charlestown Natural Health Centre just yards from the harbour itself. When we arrived we found that there was a gig racing competition being held just outside the harbour. With the ships Kaskelot and Pheonix in the harbour, and the Earl of Pembroke due back early evening, we had a fair number of subjects to choose from. The Earl of Pembroke was seen rounding the headland mid afternoon, but unfortunately the sails were taken down, so we did not get a good view of her in full sail. As she began her approach we decided to go back to CNHC for a break in time to see her enter the harbour. We had not realised how quick this would be and when we next went out she was already in the harbour and drawing up alongside the dock to moor. It was a good day, but it wasn't possible to get onto the harbour itself. If we go again it will be on a day when the public are allowed to get on board and look around. |
