1. Introduction

The information on this page relates to all the Paint Away Days unless otherwise specified in the location details.

Paint Away Days is about choice, being able to choose when and where to join in, and once on location choosing the subject to paint, as I have tried to pick places with a variety of views.

I will help wherever possible, but hopefully being in a group we will be able to inspire each other, exchange ideas and techniques. (back)

2. Costs

The cost for each Paint Away Day will be detailed on the locations page for each venue. The cost of room hire will be shared between participants, to be paid on the day. Entry fees are to be paid individually on the day, unless otherwise indicated eg if reduced fees can be had with group entry. Tea and coffe will be available throughout the day (where appropriate) for £1, profits from this will be used for the upkeep of the website. Any other unanticipated costs will be detailed on the locations page. (back)

3. Before The Day

It is necessary to book your place as early as possible, as places may be limited at each location. (back)

3. Suggestions On What To Take

When painting outside the most important thing to remember is to be comfortable. If you have already painted outside then you will know what you need to take with you, but for those who have not done so before here is a list of suggestions. You may not wish to bring all these, or you may think of something I have forgotten (if this is the case, please email me and I will make alterations when the site is next updated).

(i) Type of Clothing - This will depend on the weather, but if it is cold I prefer a few thin layers then as it warms up it is possible to remove one layer at a time. Do not forget your waterproofs if they may be required.

(ii) Seating - A folding chair is easy to carry, but sometimes it is possible to find somewhere to sit, such as a bench, a rock, or on the ground, depending on the location. Something waterproof to sit on could be useful if the ground is damp or cold.

(iii) Drinks - A flask with a hot drink, or a cold drink, again depending on the weather. The flask can be refilled at the venue during lunch.

(iv) Drawing and Painting Materials - The minimum is a pencil and paper, and maybe a rubber. This may be all you want, but if you plan to paint then obviously more is required.

a) Paper - The type depends on the paint to be used, either in a pad or single sheets with a board to rest on.

b) Pencil and Rubber - I suggest a 4H as a versatile one for sketching and drawing.

  c) Paint - My suggestions are for anybody wishing to use watercolours, gouache, or acrylics, as it is these mediums I am familiar with. If you use pastels or oils please remember to bring the necessary equipment. A variety of colours in your chosen medium, the colours needed will depend on the location we are visiting. It may be that your paint box includes an area to mix paints, otherwise a separate colour mixing container is needed.

d) Brushes - it is possible to complete a picture with only one brush, it depends on your style and technique. Although you may wish to try one larger brush and one smaller.

e) Water - A bottle containing water, and two containers to wash out the brushes. Glass is not advisable because of breakages.

f) Kitchen Roll - Very useful for wiping brushes, and mopping up spills! It may not be necessary to bring a whole roll, unless you have a lot of spills! (back)

4. On the Day

Paint Away Days will last from 10am till 4pm.

If the weather is fine we will be able to get out and paint. In the event that it is wet then we will stay at the venue. There will be photographs available for use. Also if the weather is due to be poor there will be a printer available for those who would like to go out with their digital camera to take a photo to work from

I shall arrive by 9.45am at the venue, where tea, coffee, will be available. Please try to be there by 10am so that we can start to go out and find somewhere to paint. Those who have not painted before, or who have not painted outside, and would like some guidance before they start, may wish to stay behind. I will advise and help for a short while and then you will be free to get out and have a go, (see later comments for Beginners).

  Potager Gardens near Constantine.

During the day I shall be out and about as much as I can, to make sure all is alright, and to give help where I can.

Tea and coffee are available throughout the day. It would be good to meet together before finishing to be able to see what each other has done, (see comment on Gallery later).

The time together will finish at 4pm. (back)

5. Beginners

Anybody who is a beginner at painting, or who has not painted outside before is welcome to join me at 10am for a short time, when I will give advice on how to get started. The topics covered will depend on the experience of those in the group, any questions you may have, and the location we are visiting. (back)

6. Eqipment Loan

If you have not painted before then you might like to hire paint, brushes, paper etc, all you will need to draw and paint on the day for an extra fee of £2. Then if you decide you would like to continue painting it will be possible to buy equipment at discounted prices. (back)

7. Tea and Coffee

Tea and coffee are available throughout the day, where appropriate, for a cost of £1 (any profits will go towards the maintenance of the website. It will be necessary to bring a packed lunch or to get something whilst you are out and about. Fairtrade products are used where possible. (back)

8. Transport

It is expected that most people will make their own way to the venue, but I realise that not everybody will have their own transport. If you are able to help with transport to a venue, or need transport, please let me know. (back)

9. Children

Children 10 years and older are welcome to accompany a responsible adult on a Paint Away Day. (see Terms and Conditions) (back)

10. Dogs

The details for each location will show whether dogs are allowed or not. If you intend to bring your dog please read the Terms and Conditions.

The dogs will not only be meeting other participants (and their dogs), but also with members of the general public, so please keep a good control at all times. Occasionally your dog will be allowed in the venue, but generally it will not be because of other users of the room/hall. (back)

11. Safety

One of the aspects of Paint Away Days is the fact that there is safety in numbers, and I hope that you will go out in groups of two or more, especially in the more isolated locations.

When on a Paint Away Day there will be the normal types of hazards associated with each location and although I have tried to choose suitable locations please be aware of these hazards, and keep yourself safe at all times.

At each Paint Away Day I shall give my mobile phone number to those who have mobiles with them, so that if there is an emergency I can be contacted immediately (as long as there is a signal in that location).

I have trained in Emergency First Aid so I will be able to give assistance until the emergency services arrive, if they are required. (back)

12. Gallery

At the end of each Paint Away Day we will see what each other has done during the day. I would like to photograph the pictures, with your permission, to put in an on-line gallery. It will be an opportunity to let your family and friends see what you have done. No names will be given with the pictures. (back)
